Have you heard of Girl, Wash Your Face yet? No? Well now is the time to get excited because I’m about to introduce you to the book that changed it all for me.

Ever feel like you're giving up when you really don't want to? There's a book for that! Check out this Girl, Wash Your Face Review to see if it's just what you need in your life... #girlwashyourface #motivationinlife #compassmylife

I had started to hear a little buzz about it shortly after it first came out – a friend posted about it, I saw it in a store, then I watched an Instagram live and the author was there… Then I got my hands on a copy and girl, everything changed.

This was the first book I have read in a long time that had me laughing… and crying… and laughing so hard I cried. I read a chapter and then read it again – to my husband. I think he was amused by my reaction to it than he was moved by the words. But I was moved by them, and that was enough for him.

From the moment I started reading, it landed a spot as one of my favorites of all time – and it remains there even now. I’m giving you all the details of it below. I hope you enjoy this “There’s a Book for That!” Post about how to keep going when you want to give up.

Girl Wash Your Face Review

What is Girl Wash Your Face about?

Girl power… Getting back up… Not quitting… Keep going… Washing your face.

Does all of the above work? It’s really a book about breaking apart the lies we’ve been told by society – and the ones we tell ourselves.

It’s about stepping into who you truly are, allowing the dream that lives inside of you to leave it’s tightly packed and hidden box, and then putting on your kick-butt shoes to get to work.

For me, this book was healing too. The mentalities she works through, the emotional struggles, the physical ones, she was so real and so relatable in her writing. Something I think not enough people do these days.

Every chapter was full of her stories. What’s happened in her life, how she overcame them, and how you can too. I’ve heard some people find this a bit self-centered, but it takes a lot of courage to put your life out in the public if you ask me. Besides, I’d rather hear the “how-to” from someone who has been there, than from someone with a degree any day.

Who Wrote Girl Wash Your Face?

This book was written by Rachel Hollis – a food blogger/event planner, momma of four, turned motivational speaker. She’s super confident in herself which is a trait I think we need to see in role models more often and she’s not afraid to say it like it is. Sometimes her audacity leaves me with a strange “this is uncomfortable” + “I want to be like that” mix of emotions. I know that happens though when we’re being stretched to reach for more and that’s definitely what Ms. Rachel Hollis pushes you towards.

If you’ve ever just wanted more “real” in your social media feeds, I’d suggest hitting the follow button on her Instagram.

What Genre is Girl Wash Your Face?

The book was published as Christian Literature but I think it’s really more than that. In fact, being published as that genre has been pretty controversial.

If I had to categorize it myself, I’d call if a self-help, motivational book with a hint of spirituality. It’s more “the things no one would talk about growing up” – the things we all wish someone had talked about but didn’t. This is perhaps why some people aren’t fans, but hey, not everyone is comfortable with all topics… and that’s perfectly okay.

Girl Wash Your Face Summary

To sum it up, here are the top 5 benefits reading Girl Wash Your Face has brought to my life…

1) I’m more confident in who I am

Like many women, I’ve spent most of my life living in a way that was meant to avoid judgemental stares and comments. I silenced myself, hid, worried about my reputation, all the things, really.

Since reading this book, my eyes have been opened to the fact that we can’t control other people’s thoughts and opinions. The people who are going to judge were doing so anyways – I mind as well just live my life for me.

2) I stopped giving up on my dreams

Every day, I get up and I work towards what my dreams in life are – shame free. I don’t feel guilty for having dreams, I don’t feel guilty for wanting more out of life, and I don’t feel guilty for putting in the effort and work to get there either.

3) I have a better relationship with my husband

A strange thing happened when I started more fully stepping into my role as “me”. My relationship with my husband got better.

Pretty sure it has to do with my confidence levels going up. I’m more sure of myself, of our marriage, and my role in life. It’s shown in our relationship the most.

4) I have boundaries

This may sound crazy, but I realize now that before I read this book, I had no boundaries with any of my family members. It wasn’t a healthy situation at all.

Girl Wash Your Face put me on a path to figuring out where I needed boundaries and gave me the courage to put them in place… and stick to them.

5) I took the power over my life back

Perhaps the biggest thing I got from this book, was the ability to take back the power over my life. I had spent years passing it off to other people. Every time something negative happened and I blamed someone else for it, every time something didn’t go the way I wanted and I did nothing about it, every time I let someone else affect my attitude or effort – I was giving them the power.

After reading Girl Wash Your Face, I started taking my power back. I’m the one who decides how I let something affect me. When something doesn’t go right, I’m the one who decides if giving up is an option. I’m the one who decides what direction my life will head in – other people don’t get to control me or my emotions anymore.

In the end, I’d say this book is meant to be one that helps, frees, motivates, and entertains. You’ll have to decide on your own if you want to take the advice to heart. I did and it’s changed everything for me.

Girl Wash Your Face Podcast

I see lots of questions about a Girl Wash Your Face podcast so I thought I would include this awesome bit of info here… Rachel Hollis does, in fact, have a podcast – A few of them actually.

It’s not called “Girl Wash Your Face” (although she does have several episodes devoted to her books). It’s called RISE and it’s pretty awesome. You can also listen to her RISE Together podcast that she hosts with her husband and it’s all about relationships. Plus, her “unofficial” Instagram morning show is also now consumable in podcast format. That is called The Start Today Morning Show

If that’s not enough podcast power for you… I literally don’t know what to say…

Watch Made for More

In case you didn’t know, Rachel Hollis also puts on women’s personal development conferences. She created a documentary about it for ladies who can’t make it there called Made for More. You can get it for free as an Amazon Prime member, or rent it for a small cost if not (but it’s totally worth it!).
